\F0\CCurrent Research
\JFrom 1970 to the present, I have been at Stanford University.
I lead a research group in the Computer Science Department,
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. We are fifteen
people involved in research in computer vision (pattern recognition or machine
perception) and robotics. We study particularly stereo vision and motion parallax
applied to control
of assembly devices and control of autonomous vehicles, to stereo photointerpretation
and to industrial inspection. Our study includes ways of obtaining depth
information from sequences of images seen by a moving observer, ways of
segmenting objects from background using depth information, and ways of
describing objects. I invented the "generalized cone" representation
of shape, a representation of space, and a laser-ranging system for depth
measurement.
This representation of shape is in use in three research programs in
biomedical imaging, applied to neuron and organ structure mapping.
Our program of research based on these techniques lead to
recognition of objects of the complexity of dolls, toy horses and tools.\.
\JWe have designed and implemented a language for industrial assembly, to
play the same role in standardizing programming of assembly devices that APT
has played in programming numerically-controlled machine tools.
The key research issues here include optimal and adaptive path planning
using sensory feedback from touch and force.
This research is potentially important in prosthetics.\.
My current research interests are:
math representations of shape, texture, and space
vision language
recognition algorithms
relaxation algorithms for parameter estimation
estimation theory for edge, region, curves, stereo
language for assembly
optimal path planning.
\CPrevious Research
\JBefore coming to Stanford, I worked in the same areas of research in
computer science and Artificial Intelligence at
MIT,in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, for the period 1967-1970.\.
\CPost-Doctoral Research
\JPrior to coming to MIT, I took a Fulbright grant at Tata Institute
of Fundamental Research,Bombay India, during 1965-1966.
During that period I did the
following research in fundamental particle physics:
partial wave analysis of hyperon production by pions;
Regge-pole analysis of Sigma plus production by pions;
theory of unstable particles and symmetry principles.\.
\CPhD in Physics
\JI did research in experimental particle physics and
phenomenology based on theoretical models, at the University of Wisconsin,
receiving a PhD in 1965.
The results included:
experimental investigation of strange particle production by pions near 1 Bev/c;
two new experimental equalities among cross sections;
test of charge independence in hyperon production;
Regge-pole model of high-energy elastic scattering cross sections.
I received a BS in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1957.\.
